So while I know that more than one writer worked on Hiveswap - there’s a Cohen Edenfield (about whom I know nothing) and the credits mention Ryan North’s name and a few other people’s - until I am informed otherwise it’s hard to think of it as anything other than Andrew Hussie’s brainchild. Nothing in it exists without his nod of approval.

I want to cycle back to something I wrote a couple weeks ago as a commentary on @roxilalonde ‘Gay Narratives and Andrew Hussie’s “Alternia”’ when discussing Hussie, to wit:

Homestuck, taken as a whole, is indeed progressive - inescapably progressive, even if it did not start that way, and not every part passes muster. Distinguish fandom celebration and backlash from the actual work and you find a seven-year long work of performance art in which art and artist were fundamentally transformed in the making

My point in the commentary (other than to defend Homestuck as a rare occasion in which cultural binomativity is celebrated, however imperfectly) was that the Andrew Hussie of 2009 was not the same Andrew Hussie of 2016 - that the gay-wedding-ending would not, could not have been written by the Andrew Hussie of 2009, or at the very least would not have been written with a fraction of the complexity and joy 2016 gave us.

And I feel like this is further proof of it, even if every scrap of dialogue is revealed to have been scripted by Cohen Edenfield, Andrew Hussie still approved this bit of business where one character tells another that it’s okay to tell people off if their appropriation of something makes you uncomfortable. The Andrew Hussie who still thought Damara Megido was funny in 2012* isn’t the same person in 2017.

And thank god for that, because I wasn’t all that great in 2012.

People change. People get better. And everyone who wants to behead Hussie for an imperfect work need to take into account all the ways he’s changed (and take a good hard look at their virtue five, ten years ago). That doesn’t mean ‘don’t critique Homestuck’ (because hot damn is there a shit-tonne of awful in the Dancestors. Damara and Mituna… just… sweet Jesus) but let’s also take a moment to at least acknowledge that change can happen.

*HOLY FUCK MEENAHBOUND CAME OUT IN 2012? NO WAY. NO FUCKING WAY.

"the barbie movie critiques capitalism!" i need y'all to understand and internalize that you can enjoy things even if they're not ideologically pure

keplercryptids

yes insisting that matel's glorified toy ad movie is anticapitalist is a wild assertion. but it's also fine to enjoy the dressing-up-in-pink movie without ritualistic self-admonishment and shame. like, you can enjoy a thing and also be aware that the thing is not going to liberate us from the shackles of capitalism. both things can be true.

Sometimes vito looks like he's a pre-op transman like wegg, but he could also just have gynecomastia. He has some androgynous features for sure

yugsly answered:

Vito is a trans man- but, neither he nor Wegg are “pre-op”. They just like existing the way they do. In my opinion, you should only label a trans man as “pre-op” if you know that’s something they (or yourself) personally plan on doing. Otherwise, that implies that you Need to get top surgery eventually if you’re a trans guy. Not all trans guys want top surgery (me included).

Does that make sense? My wording can be a little blunt sometimes so sorry if it sounds like I’m mad, I’m not!

Hello hello!

I saw that you have made puppets! Andd I was wondering if you have any tips on making them ! (I am very new to puppeteering, and I am looking for all the help I can get)

downydig answered:

Yes yes! I’ll try to give some of the most important things I’ve learned!

  • Have fun! Make something that makes you happy!
  • Plan out the design beforehand! Consider how the puppet will function with its form
image
  • Take your time with creating a pattern! I drape scrap fabric over my forms, then transfer them onto paper to create patterns. If you take your time, and take extra steps to make it neater, it will save you later! (There are tutorials on YouTube about this!)
image
image
  • Use the ladder stitch! It will hide nasty seams! With fur, use a whip stitch! (It’s easier if you look at the wrong side, like the picture below!)
image
  • Take chances! Try out materials, designs, bits, and boobles that you haven’t seen before! Focus on movement and character!
image
  • Make your patterns bigger than you think you need! Especially with parts like fingers, arms, ears, and noses. Smaller pieces need more room; it’s easier to make things smaller than bigger (extra around the mouth/lip is nice to have!
image
  • Avoid using glue! Stick to stitching if you can help it! If you use glue, try fabric glue with fabric on fabric, and hot glue with fabric on foam/styrofoam! (I used fabric glue for the felt and tongue here)
image
  • Use a fabric marker that has disappearing ink! It’s so much easier than using a pencil or permanent marker!
  • Don’t be discouraged if you make a mistake! I’ve made so many mistakes and have built enough puppets to know that they will happen. If something doesn’t work, or if something doesn’t make you happy, you can always try again! Doing somethin enough times and making things kinda crappy is the best way to get sorta good at something! (Bad hands, noses, stitches, rough edges, and bad wire! Yuck! All mistakes and bad decisions I’ve made!)

I hope these words and pictures help! I’m relatively new to building puppets and I have more to share if you need something in particular. I just don’t want to clog the feed or overwhelm. Thanks for the good question!

You probably hear about this a lot but I’m really new to Homestuck (on Act 2) and I was wondering what pronouns and name are correct for J. Egbert? I’ve seen some people use he/him and face no backlash for it but I’ve also seen some people saying June Egbert is canon and people need to stop deadnaming her, but I’ve also seen some people say that Hussie has also canonized horrible things so I’m not really sure what’s right and what’s not?

I know Hussie liked the headcanon for a while and declared it canon after the Toblerone thing, but I’m not really sure about anything else.

Again sorry if you’ve already answered this, I’m on the Tumblr app and it’s much harder to navigate.

homestuckexamination answered:

June Egbert is a fictional character, and the content of Homestuck includes her prior to transition, as well as a period of many years where people didn’t even imagine this would be the direction the (current, dubious) canon would lead down, and as such, projected on Egbert with their own identities, including trans men and nonbinary people.

Referring to Egbert prior to the transition because you’re talking about the events of HS Proper, or headcanoning Egbert a different way than post-canon is not Deadnaming. You can talk about erasure, representation, projection, identity, etc, in various ways- But I really don’t think you can call talking about HS Egbert ‘Deadnaming’ in any capacity, and specially as someone who literally just started reading the comic, you’re experiencing Egbert chronologically. It’s up to your level of comfort and interpretation.

How did the "June egbert become canon" thing happened? I vaguely remember it involved a toblerone bar but it's been a while.

wakraya answered:

The team had already been discussing the possibility of June Egbert internally, and how to tackle it in the Epilogues and HS^2, when Hussie went on a trip and hid a Toblerone for people to find as one of the. Many eccentric silly things they do.

So someone found the Toblerone, and they were a fan of June Egbert, so when Hussie said they’d grant a wish for finding their Toblerone, they wished for June. And knowing that internally it was already in the works, Hussie decided to announce that, yeah sure, it’d be done.

(EDIT: My bad, the person who found it jokingly declared June to be canon as they had Hussie’s Toblerone, and Hussie replied ‘you found my treasure, so it shall be done’. When this first happened, the idea of Toblerone = Wish wasn’t there yet.)

What ensued later in the Fandom because of this statement was a major mess I am not going to get into, right now, but, I will say, unlike what some people say- Claiming that the comic was ‘Queer Baiting’ with June or that 'it never happened, hence, the writers are transphobic’, which honestly fuck you- it HAD been building up towards slowly exploring June’s relationship to gender!

Here’s a series of little June Egbert Gender Moments™ I’ve compiled.
